Lawn Care Marketing Insights from CLIP’s founder, Dave Tucker.

Starting and growing a lawn care business doesn’t have to feel like an uphill battle. As someone who has spent decades refining the art of lawn maintenance through systems and strategy, I want to share some tried-and-true marketing methods that can give your lawn care company the edge it needs to thrive.

Whether you’re just starting out or looking to scale, the key lies in pairing strategic marketing with a clear understanding of your customer base. Let’s dive into some actionable insights that can transform how you connect with your market.

1. Door Hangers: A Personal Touch That Works

Door hangers remain one of the most effective ways to reach potential customers, especially when you’re new. It’s direct, personal, and places your brand front and center—literally on their doorknob. Include a compelling offer, like a first-time discount, and highlight what sets your services apart. A well-designed door hanger with clear calls to action can lead to a surprising number of calls.

2. Postcards: Stand Out in the Mailbox

A strategically crafted postcard can complement your door-to-door efforts. Postcards work best when they’re visually engaging and provide immediate value, such as a seasonal promotion or a free estimate. Keep the design clean, and make your contact information prominent. When done consistently, postcard campaigns can help you establish a presence in the neighborhoods you want to serve.

3. The Power of First Impressions

Once you land that first customer, treat the experience as more than just a transaction—it’s the start of a relationship. Celebrate the milestone (I call this my “happy dance moment”) and ensure you deliver exceptional service. Happy customers are your most powerful marketing tool, often leading to referrals that cost you nothing.

4. Build Trust Through Honest Marketing

One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is that honesty and transparency in your messaging matter. Customers value companies they can trust, so stay true to your commitments, provide accurate estimates, and honor your agreements. Trust is a foundation that turns first-time clients into long-term contracts.

5. Systematize Your Efforts

Marketing doesn’t have to be overwhelming. By creating a simple system—whether it’s scheduling door hanger drops, automating postcard campaigns, or setting aside time to gather reviews—you can ensure that marketing becomes a routine part of your business. Consistency builds momentum, and momentum builds success.

6. Referrals the Right Way

This is often overlooked and is one of the most effective ways to land new clients. Referrals. This is not a flyer. It’s a conversation. If you can have a conversation with the home or business owner, it’s best to ask face-to-face. “Mrs. Smith. I hope you’ve enjoyed the lawn maintenance service we’ve provided. We’re looking to bring on a few more clients. What two people do you know who might enjoy the same kind of service we provide?” Then be quiet and let them answer. If they need to give it some thought, then hand them a self-addressed envelope with a piece of paper filled out for them with space for 3 or 4 referrals. If you cannot have a face-to-face conversation, leave behind a self-addressed envelope with the referral sheet. Something about having a stamp on there that helps. Most people don’t want to waste a stamp. Give it a try.
