Hey, clippers! Dave Tucker here with the next installment of our CLIP startup series.

Today I want to talk about a few reasons why you should choose lawn maintenance for your business. And I’d like to start with a story.

My nephew, James, was eleven years old when he had the opportunity to go on a wonderful mission trip to Mexico, but there was only one catch: He had to raise $1000 to cover the costs.

So, when he came to me for help, I decided to teach him what I knew best: lawn maintenance. I helped him borrow a lawnmower from a friendly neighbor and sent him around the neighborhood to knock on doors. His sales pitch was simple: He told each homeowner that he was looking to raise money for a mission trip and asked if they’d like to hire him to mow their lawn.

James was a friendly kid — he still is! — and a good worker. By the end of the summer, he had earned $2500. After the mission trip, he decided to continue mowing lawns. He earned $150+ per week throughout high school by working just one day a week. Not bad for a teenager.

James’ story, and that of hundreds like him I’ve helped start a lawn maintenance business, illustrates perfectly why it’s an easy, excellent option:

  • Ease of entry

  • Easy to earn the first dollar

  • Easy to keep clients

It’s easy to start a lawn maintenance business

You don’t need any lofty credentials, an arsenal of fancy equipment, or a lengthy education. When you start, all you really need is a good lawnmower and a good attitude. That’s all James had, and he wound up earning enough to buy a cruise for his mom for Christmas as a high school student.

Many of the most successful lawn maintenance businesses began with a young man like James pushing a lawnmower around the neighborhood, drumming up business.

Start earning money right away

You’ve probably heard the old saying that a business owner can’t expect to make money for a year or more after they get started. James couldn’t wait around to start earning. Thankfully, when you start your lawn maintenance business, you don’t have to wait around either. Lawn maintenance is a service. You don’t have to invest your savings or pour all your hard-earned dollars back into inventory, space rental, or manufacturing.

The moment you start up your mower, you start earning money.

Customers that stay with you forever

Here’s the thing about “the beautiful business:” Grass never stops growing. The leaves fall every year. As long as this is true, you’ll have work to do. If you can impress a new customer the first time you work with them, you’ve got a customer for life.

If you were to start a landscape construction business or a driveway pouring business, you would have to look for new customers constantly. You only build a retaining wall once, and that driveway won’t need to be replaced for ten years. But lawns need maintenance all the time, which means continuous business for you.

And here’s another thing: Customers are easy to find. You don’t have to wait around for customers to find you. Anyone with a lawn and a front door is fair game. And with Facebook, NextDoor, Craigslist, and other easy digital marketing tools at your fingertips, you can expand your reach.

Now you might find yourself wondering: If this is so easy that a kid can do it, why isn’t everybody doing it? Many people don’t see the rich possibilities of a lawn maintenance business: a loyal customer base, low start-up costs, and high earning potential. The opportunity is waiting for you to seize it. And with the right lawn maintenance business software, there’s no limit to how much you can grow.
