CLIP Lawn Care in Murfreesboro just started this season and we’ve been growing and learning a lot about what it’s like to start up a company in a brand new area. Here are some of the things we found out and how we’ve grown.
This is Javi, our local employee-of-all-trades. He manages, runs and does all the work at this branch. The magnetic signs on the trailer and truck were purchased right when we started and have given us a lot of comments on how “professional looking” our company is compared to competition here.
We started the season doing a mix of door hangers (left on doors in the neighborhoods we felt really fit our perfect customer ideal) and flyers (also only sent to neighborhoods that fit our criteria). We have also gotten some customers from word of mouth and hope to get more.
Our $20 special marketing message has gotten us in the door with a lot of customers. The $20 special is where we offer to cut their lawn for only $20 the first time and then we leave an estimate for what the cost would be in the future for a cut or weekly contract. We also try to answer the phone immediately whenever possible and call back right away if we can’t get to the phone.
One surprising change we found in this area verses our branch in Maryland is that people respond much better to mailed postcards here than door hangers. We sent out 13,000 postcards and handed out 6,000 door hangers and got the biggest response from postcards. Originally, we planned to do more door hangers than postcards but the response showed us that flyers work better in our current area.
Here our some questions and answers from our local branch manager in TN:
Question: Is there anything that you’ve learned since this Spring that you wish you knew when you first started?
Javi: That the people here are more relaxed and they don’t like big contracts (agreements) so you need to push them more to decide. The postcards are also a success here, so next year I’m going to send them earlier in the season.
Question: In what particular way did CLIP Software help you succeed with CLIP Lawn Care?
Javi: In CLIP Sofware, the routing is very important to give the company the cost per visit and the travel time cost.
Question: Do you have any unique stories of how you’ve gotten customers?
Javi: I was loading some gas, and a gentleman ask me how much I’d charge to mow a half acre, I told him that I’d need to do the job at least once in order to give him a quote. Then a week later his neighbor called me because the gas station guy had mentioned my company. I did the first mow/estimate for the gas guy’s neighbor and he signed up the same day.
